Alpha-Tocopherol-Acetate in Local Mucosa Treatment in Singers:
Pharygitis, Common Cold and Nasal Allergy

Introduction
Infectious diseases of nose, pharynx, and larynx are compromising singers general health and voice. In addition, seasonal allergic rhinitis is a challenge in treatment of singers too: a variety of drugs should better be excluded due to their adverse effects like tiredness and on the mucosal cover of the vocal chords. With alpha-tocopherol-acetate we have a local treatment in our ambulatory arsenal promising to help in both: preventing (common cold) and treating (nasal allergy or pharyngitis).

Method
This is the report about the experience in ambulatory treatment of singers and non-singers during 2014 through 2015 with Vea oris (R) oral spray and Filme nasale (R) nasal spray. Both sprays bring alpha-tocopherol-acetate onto the mucosa of the patients aiming to treat the pharynx and the nose. The indication for Vea oris-spray is the (A) established pharyngitis (n = 34) and the (B) prevention of common cold (n = more than 80); Filme nasale-spray is applicated in (C) nasal allergy (prospective study in three arms: local steroids vs. systemic antihistamines vs. Filme nasale-spray, n = 120).

Results
(A) All patients with viral pharyngitis had a benefit with loss of pain, dysphagia, and no need of antibiotics. The majority of patients came with a long history of antibiotics without effect on the throat disease. Vea oris reached healing within three to seven days.
(B) Based on the encouraging experience of several opera singers from Italy our patients were advised to use Vea oris-spray during the first hours in common cold developing: this alpha-tocopherol-acetate showed a remarkable prevention against establishing rhinitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis and Laryngitis. We observed only few persons with common cold after the use of Vea oris. Those persons reported to have fallen below the recommended dose (at least four times three puffs the day).
(C) It is very astonishing how promptly the Filme nasale-spray stops the symptoms of seasonal nasal allergy. Within five minutes after three puffs the symptoms fade and disappear. Patients adjust the amount of alpha-tocopherol-acetate depending on pollen forecast and personal way of life: performing outdoor sports, working indoor, rainy or sunny weather and wind. They need no other medical treatment like steroids or antihistamine. Especially women during pregnancy report to be happy with this effective but not critical medical treatments such recommended by their obstetrics.

Conclusions
Based on the general experience the profit of the alpha-tocopherol-acetate approach to professional singers with pharyngitis and seasonal allergic rhinitis is substantial: Non-bacterial pharyngitis does not need any antibiotic therapy; Vea oris-spray is sufficient for the relief of symptoms within a couple of days; Filme nasale-spray is a very smart alternative treatment of the seasonal allergic rhinitis without any steroid or antihistamine. Up to now we know about the significant positive effect on the allergy versus pollen, for example birch, hazelnut or grass pollen. The effect on other inhalative nasal allergy like cat hair/saliva or house dust/mite is the aim of further studies. And the prevention of common cold by use of Vea oris-spray in the first hours of the beginning of symptoms has a great benefit for all persons, especially in persons who are dependent on their voice. So the use of alpha-tocopherol-acetate is recommended for local mucosal prevention and treatment of professional singers.
